Today, our Belt and Road Scholars (Kira, Jemma, and Egor), along with Prof. Wen Jung Li, had the privilege of attending the Belt and Road Office Talk. This event provided a valuable opportunity to dive deep into the needs and experiences of international students studying in Hong Kong and beyond. We heard insightful presentations from 8 UGC-funded universities, each sharing their strategies and experiences in attracting scholars from the Belt and Road region. The discussions highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments for international students, ensuring they thrive during their studies and beyond.

🏅 CityU iGEM Won Gold at iGEM 2024!

We’re beyond thrilled to announce that our CityU iGEM team, under the supervision of Prof. Maria Babak, has received a Gold Medal at this year’s iGEM Competition in Paris 2024! In an intense competition among 195 teams, CityU iGEM made it to the Top 10 for Best Presentation, the Top 5 for Best Therapeutics Project, and the Top 5 for Best Education—and we’re thrilled to share that we won Best Education! 🏆 This recognition is a testament to our team’s dedication to outreach and the power of synthetic biology education. All of that, however, would not be possible without our group members: Egor, Ho Jung, Maryana, and Prof. Maria Babak.

We are becoming more and more international, and after a super long wait, we finally welcome our research assistant, Samah Mutasim Alfadul, from Sudan. Samah is a molecular biologist and a lecturer at Ahfad University for Women. She will be working on anticancer drugs that affect tubulin polymerisation. Samah’s arrival to Hong Kong was extremely problematic: visa delays, travel bans, lost flight tickets, 21 days of quarantine… We really hope that all your problems are over now. Good luck, Samah!

Our doctor, Jemma, has finally arrived from Armenia and finished her quarantine! Jemma will be performing animal surgeries and will be investigating the immunomodulating properties of the drugs in vitro and in vivo!
